Overview

Student Reader for Google Docs™ is designed to help students read Google Docs aloud using browser or system speech synthesis. The add-on provides reading, follow-along, display, word-pronunciation, reading-position, reflection, and optional English-to-Spanish translation supports.

Information the Add-on Accesses

Student Reader accesses text from the currently open Google Doc only when a user invokes a reading function. A user may request the entire document, selected text, the current paragraph, or text from the cursor. The add-on uses the current-document authorization model; it is not authorized to browse unrelated Google Drive files.

Student Reader uses Google Apps Script DocumentApp APIs to return the requested text to the active Sidebar or Reading Workspace during the user's Google session. The text is used to display the Reading Preview, provide requested reading supports, and, only when Spanish is intentionally selected, request a Spanish translation.

Information We Do Not Collect

Student Reader does not sell Google Docs content or permanently store it on DonatiTech servers. Document content is used during the active Student Reader session to provide the features the user requests. When optional Spanish translation is used, the English text being translated is processed through Google's Apps Script Language service as described below.

Text-to-Speech Processing

Speech is produced through the browser Speech Synthesis API using voices exposed by the browser or operating system. Available voices and speech behavior depend on the user's device, operating system, browser, browser profile, and school-managed settings. Student Reader does not operate an external text-to-speech service, record audio, or upload audio.

Optional Spanish Translation

Original English is the default. Translation begins only when the user intentionally selects Spanish after loading English text. Student Reader sends the English text being translated through its Google Apps Script function, where Google's Apps Script Language service processes bounded portions of the text and returns a Spanish translation to the active Student Reader session.

The translated result is displayed in the Reading Preview and may be spoken with an available Spanish browser or system voice. Translation does not alter the original Google Doc. Student Reader does not save translated text in localStorage, maintain translation history, use a third-party translation provider operated by DonatiTech, or use an external translation API key.

Google services are governed by Google's applicable terms and privacy policies. DonatiTech does not make claims about Google's internal processing or retention beyond the behavior described in Google's own policies.

Data Storage

Student Reader uses local browser storage for preferences such as selected voice, reading speed, sentence and word highlighting, preview text size, Reading Focus, Reading Display settings, and Reading Workspace width. These preferences are stored in the user's browser profile and are not sent to DonatiTech.

For Original English reading, Student Reader may also store limited reading-position and bookmark metadata under a key associated with a hashed document identifier. This metadata includes position or sentence-index information and bookmark labels; it does not include document text. The hash is used to associate local metadata with a document and should not be understood as a guarantee of anonymity.

Document text, Spanish translated text, translation history, and Reading Check-In responses are not stored in localStorage. Browser-local preferences and bookmark metadata may differ across computers, browsers, or browser profiles and may be removed by clearing the site's local browser storage.

Reading Check-In Responses

Reading Check-In provides reflection prompts and a response field. A response remains only in the currently open Student Reader interface and is cleared when that interface closes. Responses are not saved in localStorage, written to the Google Doc or Google Drive, attached to bookmarks, sent to Google's Apps Script Language service, transmitted to DonatiTech, graded, evaluated by AI, or stored in a database.

Data Retention and Deletion

Student Reader retrieves Google Docs document text only when a user initiates a reading action. The document text is processed solely to provide the requested read-aloud and accessibility features during the active reading session.

Google Docs document text and any Spanish translation are available only in the active Sidebar or Reading Workspace during the user's Google session. They are not retained by DonatiTech.

DonatiTech does not permanently store Google Docs document content, does not maintain backups of document text, and does not retain copies of document content on DonatiTech servers.

Because Google user data accessed by Student Reader is retained only for the duration of the active reading session, DonatiTech does not permanently retain Google user data after the session ends. As a result, there is no Google user data stored by DonatiTech that requires subsequent deletion.

The local preferences and reading-position or bookmark metadata described above are not transmitted to DonatiTech and may be removed by clearing the site's local browser storage.

Analytics, Advertising, and the DonatiTech Website

The Student Reader add-on does not include analytics, advertising, telemetry, or tracking integrations. This statement describes the Student Reader application. General visits to DonatiTech website pages may also be subject to infrastructure-level processing by the website hosting and network providers under their applicable policies.

Student Privacy

Student Reader is intended for educational use. Schools and teachers should review this policy, the requested Google OAuth scopes, and any district requirements before classroom deployment.

Third-Party Services

Student Reader runs inside Google Docs and relies on Google Apps Script and Google Workspace APIs. Use of Google services is governed by Google's applicable terms and privacy policies.

Changes to This Policy

DonatiTech may update this privacy policy as Student Reader evolves. Material changes should be reviewed before classroom use.
