Google Docs reading support

Student Reader for Google Docs

Read Google Docs aloud with local browser voices.

Student Reader for Google Docs is a classroom-friendly reading support add-on designed for students, teachers, accessibility, and literacy support.

Features

Reading tools for classroom Google Docs.

Student Reader helps students listen to text directly inside Google Docs. Speech is produced with the browser's built-in speech synthesis voices on the student's device.

Flexible reading

Read selected text, the current paragraph, text from the cursor, or the entire document.

Voice controls

Choose available voices, test the selected voice, and adjust reading speed.

Multilingual voices

Supports English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Chinese voices when installed on the device.

Privacy-first MVP

Document text is not sent to DonatiTech servers or external text-to-speech services.

Privacy

Local speech, no external text processing.

Student Reader accesses text through Google Apps Script DocumentApp APIs only when a user chooses a reading action. Text-to-speech runs locally in the Google Docs sidebar using browser speechSynthesis.

Student Reader does not translate text yet. It reads the existing document text with the selected voice.
