Getting Started

  1. Open a Google Doc.
  2. Open the Student Reader add-on.
  3. Choose Open Reader.
  4. Use the sidebar to choose what to read: entire document, cursor, selected text, or current paragraph.
  5. Choose a language and voice.
  6. Select a reading speed.
  7. Click Stop Reading when finished.

Voice Support

Student Reader uses voices installed or available in the user's browser. Supported language filters are English, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, and French.

If no voice appears for a selected language, try another device, another Chrome profile, or ask your school technology team whether additional system voices can be enabled.

Microsoft Zira

On many Windows devices, Student Reader will prefer Microsoft Zira for English reading when available.

Does Student Reader Translate Text?

No. Student Reader does not translate text yet. It reads existing document text aloud using the selected language voice.

Privacy

Student Reader does not send document text to DonatiTech servers or external text-to-speech services in this MVP. Speech is generated locally in the browser sidebar.

Troubleshooting

I do not hear audio

Read From Cursor does not work

Click inside the document text first, then try Read From Cursor again.

Read Selected Text does not work

Select text in the Google Doc first, then choose Read Selected Text.

A language has no voices

Voice availability depends on the device and browser profile. Student Reader can only list voices the browser exposes.
